How to Prepare for Your First Dentist Appointment: A Step-by-Step Guide
Your first dentist appointment is a huge milestone.
Maybe you’re reading this as you prepare to take your child to their first ever appointment. Maybe it’s your first dental appointment as an adult, or for a few years. Either way, at White Space Dental, we want you, or your child, to feel at ease when you visit.
We understand that the dentist can often bring up mixed emotions; perhaps some anxiety or fear and trepidation about what will happen. However, most first visits are much simpler and more relaxed than you would expect. We want this experience to be the first of many visits that help maintain and improve your oral health.
Your smile is important to us. So is your comfort when visiting us. This guide illustrates what typically happens when you come for a dentist appointment, when you should go, and how to prepare so the experience feels as easy as possible.
Understanding the Importance of Your First Dentist Appointment
Your first visit is less about treatment and more about establishing a baseline for your oral health.
As dentists, the purpose of this visit is essentially getting a full picture of your teeth and gums so they can understand what care, if any, is needed going forward.
A typical first appointment usually involves:
- a discussion about your dental history and any concerns you might have
- X-rays to see areas that aren’t visible during a standard check
- an examination of your mouth
- for adults, a professional clean may also be recommended
If any follow-up treatments are needed, we typically wait till the end of the appointment to go through these with you, as well as your options moving forward.
When Should You Start Going to the Dentist?
There’s no strict age for adults to have their first dental appointment, as it can happen at any stage of life. Every person is different, and each dental care plan is entirely unique to you.
We understand that booking your first appointment as an adult can be daunting, which is why many wait a few years to do so.
Leaving the dentist for years can cause issues to build up, creating more complex concerns over time. We always encourage regular visits – the more you stay on top of dental visits, the less scary it is, and we can also spot any potential issues or cavities much sooner.
Here at White Space Dental, we believe it is important that children start their dental journey early in life to avoid future problems. We generally say around their first birthday is a great first time for a dental visit, but this can be earlier or later depending on the child’s development. Our aim is to make the dentist a fun and positive experience for your child and to build their confidence and good dental habits early on.
How to Prepare for Your First Visit
Preparing for your first dentist appointment is simple. If you’ve been brushing and flossing as usual, you’re already doing the right things! Today is just a day to check in.
We would recommend starting your day as normal. Prior to the appointment, it’s best to simply brush and floss as you normally would, arrive a little early so you’re not rushed, and make a note of any questions or concerns you want to raise during the appointment.
If you know you’re nervous, it can also help to let the clinic know in advance so they can take a more gentle and paced approach while they are with you. Our mission at White Space Dental is to change the way you feel about going to the dentist, and we’ll start this with you from your very first appointment.
For children, the best preparation is often about framing the experience calmly and neutrally rather than creating any anticipation or excitement. The more we treat it as simply another normal task, the easier we can manage their emotions!
After the Appointment
Once your visit is finished, your dentist will usually talk you through what happens next. For many, that simply means scheduling a routine check-up in six to twelve months. If any treatment is needed, you’ll be given a clear plan and next steps so nothing feels uncertain or rushed.
If you’ve been putting off your first visit, you’re not alone. Our team is here to make the experience feel calm, clear and comfortable from the moment you contact us. We hope that you can come to your first dentist appointment at White Space Dental feeling more confident and assured with the process.
